CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Mathis Independent School District school board voted to terminate athletics director Roger Masters' contract at the end of the year in a specially called meeting Friday.
The vote was unanimous, 7-0.
Masters is accused of having improper electronic communication with a former student in a prior school year, according to the district.
The head football coach, and district superintendent Tim Norman, were put on paid administrative leave Monday.
In a letter explaining its decision Friday, the board states that Norman provided it with documents regarding the inappropriate communication April 16. The letter states that Norman hadn't previously shared the documents with the board.
When the board met April 22 -- the first day the board could legally meet in accordance with the Texas Open Meetings Act -- both men were placed on leave. Friday was the first day the board could again meet because three days notice are needed to legally adhere to the Act.
The letter states that Masters' attorney gave the district Masters' letter of resignation April 24, but the board chose to keep him on paid administrative leave until the end of the current school year, when his contract will officially be terminated.
One former student who did not want to be identified for this report was shocked by the allegations but believes the board made the right decision.
"I personally knew Coach Masters he goes way beyond his kids and for students, and even seeing him as a dad, he was so important to his little kids, being here, just wanted to know what was going to happen to him, even though the situation was very heartbreaking I still wanted to know where he was going to go and what was going to happen."
No action was taken against Norman on Friday, but 3NEWS was told a decision on his future with the district could come at a later date.
Norman remains on paid administrative leave.
This is a developing story. 3NEWS will provide updates as they become available.
