CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Get your nickels and dimes ready because the annual Fill the Boot program is getting ready to kick off Friday!
Local firefighters and program coordinators were making last-minute preparations Tuesday for the campaign, which has been going strong for 70 years now.
First started in 1954, Fill the Boot collects funds "one dollar at a time" from the community to help raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
This year's co-coordinator Carlos Torres told 3NEWS that firefighters will be out collecting at almost any intersection across the city that's near a fire station
He said that any lit bit helps.
"Citizens can fill the boot, drop in the change," Torres said. "The pennies, and coins and dimes, they add up to a total of $40,000 every year, more than $40,000."
CCFD said that out of the past four years, Corpus Christi has beaten San Antonio, Austin and Dallas to be the number one fundraising city in our district three times.
Firefighters will be out collecting donations on Friday, March 8, March 15 and March 22.
