CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The hit-and-run crash that occurred on South Padre Island Drive over the weekend is now raising larger concerns about overall safety along the frontage road.
The owner of Oh My Goodness Boutique, who wished to remain anonymous, said this isn't the first time a car has crashed into her business after exiting Highway 358 onto the SPID frontage road.
"It's a very dangerous exit to be perfectly honest," she said. "All the businesses are at risk because there is no railing. You can basically get off at any point of SPID and just fly off literally. This is the second time this has happened."
This time, the owner said she has plans in place to protect her business against future crashes.
"Moving forward, we are having metal railings that will hopefully stop cars from damaging the building," she said.
Right next door is where Rosa and Mike Romero are hard at work fixing up customers' prized furniture. Rosa is the co-owner of Mike's Custom Upholstery. They too are located right next to the highway and have experienced their fair share of close calls.
"We got hit twice. They called me in the middle of the night and told me someone came and crashed into the sign," she said.
Rosa said that having a brick-and-mortar right next to a busy highway comes with its own share of troubles.
"People that come on the feeder, they come real fast," she said.
In the end, Rosa said that all she wants is answers.
"How many people have to die so they can do something over there," she said.
3NEWS reached out to the Corpus Christi Police Department along with the Texas Department of Transportation, but they were unable to confirm if they have seen an increase in accidents in that area. Both owners said they hope drivers try to exit safely as they leave the highway.
