'There's that human element from beginning to end' | CCISD refines using AI in the classroom

District officials explained to 3NEWS how teachers and students are using the new tool.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Independent School District rolled out the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as one of their learning tools back in fall 2023.

Since then, the district has been learning more about how to polish and refine their use of the tool in classroom curriculum.

CCISD Coordinator of Innovative Technologies Denis Wisner said while academic integrity was a hurdle they saw when first considering AI, they're finding ways to adapt to the software.

"It cannot ask this education AI app to say, 'Write this thesis statement about XYZ,' " he said. "It's going to say 'Well, let's talk about the thesis statement.' ''

Wisner said part of that process is the 20-60-20 model he created. It's a criteria that gives definitive lines between AI and human guidance.

"Once you have those learning objectives in those standards, and in some cases your differentiating, there's that human element from beginning to end," he said.

CCISD District 3 school board member Marty Bell said while he understands the benefit of AI, there is more he'd like to know when it comes to practicality.

"It's really neat on a one-on-one situation, but how can you take it to a macro situation," he said.

Bell said he just wants to make sure that technology lends a helping hand to teachers, not weigh them down.

"You ask teachers besides salary, what's the most important thing that you can give them and that's time," he said.
