CCPD introduces virtual reporting to streamline police reports

With WebEx, individuals reporting a crime can do so virtually, without requiring an officer to travel across town for non-emergencies.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Filing a police report has become easier for many.

CCPD has introduced a new feature that enables you to virtually meet with a police officer to file your case.

"We have a unit called the telephone reporting unit, it’s been around since the 80s -with technology advancing the Chief approached me and asked me to look at something that would allow for a face to face -with people wishing to make a report," said CCPD Deputy Chief of Police Christopher White.

White, who oversees dispatch, stated that the department receives between 100 and 150 calls per day. With WebEx, individuals reporting a crime can do so virtually, without requiring an officer to travel across town for non-emergencies.

"That way we can focus our officers on the higher priority calls, major accidents, crimes against persons, patrol our streets and the neighborhoods that need our presence. Make that more available," he said.

According to White, it's important for residents to continue expressing their concerns to a uniformed officer in real-time. To do so, you simply need to download WebEx on your mobile device or computer and call the emergency line. Residents can then choose option one and inform the dispatcher of their desire for a face-to-face meeting.

Subsequently, an officer will send a meeting link.

White said that once the call is concluded, the officer will generate the police report and take the necessary actions. He also mentioned that the choice to file a report in person remains available at the main office downtown and the substation in Flour Bluff.

"If they don’t want to wait for an officer to come out to their house or pick up the phone they can just come out here between 9-5 -come talk to me and I’ll make the report for them," said CCPD Senior Officer Eric Smith.

This service will be accessible from Monday to Friday, 7-10 a.m., and 5-8 p.m.
