CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A group of Corpus Christi city leaders are in California touring two desal plants that are in operation there.
The group visiting is made up of a number of city officials including councilman Roland Barrera, City Manager Peter Zanoni and the COO of Corpus Christi Water Drew Molly.
The first plant tour took place in Carlsbad, California Thursday morning at Claud Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant which is owned and operated by Channelside Water Resources. It cost a billion dollars to build back in 2015 and is billed as the largest and most advanced seawater desalination facility in North America.
The 50-million-gallon-a-day facility is larger than what the city wants to build along the Inner Harbor, but it gave the group a good idea of what ours could look like and how big it actually is.
"It's helping us better understand how the facility works," Zanoni said. "We're learning from them lessons learned. If they had to do it again what would they do or not do. And then it helps us with relationships."
On Friday, city officials will take a tour of The Charles E. Meyer Desalination Plant in Santa Barbara.
The tours will last through Saturday.
