CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi is hosting the Coastal Bend Regional Science Fair Friday and Saturday, attracting students from 11 counties across the region.
On Friday the junior and senior divisions competed, with a record 267 students from 6th - 12th grade participating.
Winners of those divisions will go on to the state level and could potentially compete internationally!
TAMU-CC Assistant Professor and Science Fair Director Debra Plowman said this year's competition is fierce.
"I had a really interesting comment today from a new volunteer who helped us set up the hall—we all spent yesterday setting it up and today helping them find their spots—and he said he felt sorry for the judges because he thought the projects were so amazing," Plowman said.
One of those projects was from Ray High School student Sharmada Palakurthi, designed to help with the prevention and treatment of strokes. She's been working on it since the start of last summer while working at the Texas A&M University- Kingsville lab.
Palakurthi said being in the room with so many other talented students and their projects is a one-of-a-kind experience.
"I've done science fairs since I was in elementary school, and so it's always a great opportunity to come here, like, see so many great projects and honestly learn from each other," she said.
The event continues Saturday with the Elementary Science Fair that will include 400 area kinder through fifth grade students.
