Corpus Christi sees flooding after heavy rains in several parts of city

Island residents dreaded having to travel on Park Road 22 on Thursday, knowing how susceptible it is to flooding during heavy rain events.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coastal Bend got some much needed rain, and a lot of it, with many parts of the Coastal Bend seeing flooding and pooling water

Padre Island resident William Bright is one of the many drivers who utilize Park Road 22, a stretch of road that tends to get submerged when heavy rain hits Padre Island.

"It's a hassle and we deal with it every time it floods," Bright said. "It's kind of a pain, it's kind of a pain to deal with."

He said that your vehicle can make or brake your drive on Padre Island during heavy rainfall.

"They have to have a truck or something to get through the water," Bright said. "Everyone else who has a car that's low to the ground they have to stop and turn around so they don't get stuck."

Corpus Christi Assistant Director of Public Works Gabriel Hinojosa said that Park Road 22 is one of many areas in the city that are susceptible to flooding during heavy rains.

"Anything off of Oso Creek, directly off of Oso Creek is going to have susceptibility to flooding just because when those waters rise in Oso Creek there's no way for the water to get out from the city," Hinojosa said.

He said that location also plays a vital role in determining an area's proneness to flooding.

"Any low lying areas such as Flour Bluff, The Island, North Beach, you know your topography is almost basically at sea level," Hinojosa said.

Bright said that in the future, he would like to see more done to address flooding on Padre Island.

"Some type of drainage, because the same spots flood every time it rains out here," he said.

Unfortunately, this is something that said is easier said than done, according to Hinojosa.

"It's really just the nature of Padre Island, the topography out there" he said. "There's really nothing, channels you can provide out there you can provide for drainage like what you see in the city."
