Corpus Christi to get a Bass Pro Shops store, mayor announces

The outdoors megastore has been in talks with the city for two years, Bass Pro Shops officials said during the news conference.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi is getting a Bass Pro Shop, Mayor Paulette Guajardo announced Wednesday morning.

Guajardo said the news conference was to announce Corpus Christi had been selected as one of the store's next destinations, but had no specific information, such as location.

The outdoors sports megastore has been in talks with the city for two years, Bass Pro Shops officials said during the news conference, and said the region's rich hunting and fishing history contributed to the choice.

"They don't take likely where they put their stores.. Two years, it has been because they're studying this market, they're making certain this is the right place for their store," Guajardo said. "So today says we know this is the right place."

Company representative Mike Dunham said the Coastal Bend region's fish and other wildlife species into account in the store's design.

"There's no stores alike," Dunham said. "Every one is uniquely built to pay tribute to the heritage of its region."

Corpus Christi native Tony Reyes and his family are big hunters. He's excited to see the store's economic impact.

"You know you have a lot of these surrounding towns like San Diego and all these nice lakes people go fishing in.<" Reyes said. "So it's not just going to affect Corpus Christi, it's going to affect the surrounding areas."

Dunham said the new store should open sometime in 2026.

He also said Newsweek recently recognized the company as a reputable place to work.

This is a developing story. 3NEWS will provide updates as they become available.
