Here's how a deceased candidate is guaranteed to win the Pct. 1 constable race in Kleberg County

The only candidate to chose from is Republican Bill Hack. However, he died on August 26.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In Kleberg County a deceased candidate is not only on the ballot, but is also guaranteed to win the race.

This unique circumstance is joined by another that left all of the candidates for the school board in Riviera ISD off of the ballot.

However, according to Kleberg County Clerk Sonny Barrera III, these problems don't seem to be keeping voters from heading to the polls.

On this year's ballot, voters will notice that Republican Bill Hack is the only candidate in the Constable Precinct 1 race. His name is on there even though he died back on August 26.

"Since it was after the [ballot] deadline according to the Secretary of State, you know with the codes and so forth, he remains on the ballot," Barrera said.

The county clerk explained that after the election the commissioners court will appoint someone to serve as the constable.

3NEWS also asked Barrera about another unusual election ballot issue.

Those voting for the four Riviera ISD school board positions will find they have to write in the candidates of their choice because their names don't appear on the ballot. We were told those weren't turned over to in time to make it on the ballot.

"On the ballot you'll have the blank slots," he said. "What we do because we get the names from the school district and we post those names and we mail out those names, so when people go to vote those names are in the little booths."

Riviera resident Maria Caballero caught up with 3NEWS after casting her vote.

"Everything was easy, the staff was great, the write in was not hard at all; it was awesome I'm glad I voted early," she said.

Riviera ISD officials shared the following statement with 3NEWS:

"There was an irregularity with the submission of applications for all candidates and the deadline to file for their name on the ballot was missed.

After contacting our district legal counsel, it was determined there was time for them to be considered write-in candidates."
