What is holding back the new Aransas County Courthouse from opening?

In a letter of concern, Judge Garza said that it is the County's position that the architectural firm is accountable for the errors.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Aransas County held a special commissioners court meeting Thursday to discuss just what exactly is holding back the completion of the new courthouse.

Commissioners and County Judge, Ray Garza gathered at the district courtroom to discuss a few problems that are delaying the opening of the nearly $23 million courthouse for at least a few months.

One of the first things brought up in the meeting is that there is an issue with the insulation in the attic of the new courthouse. In a letter of concern sent by County Judge Ray Garza to the architectural firm PGAL, it states the insulation was ineffective.

Mark Williams with Broaddus and Associates said that his team has planned to bring in a few vendors next week to try and resolve that issue.

"We have planned for next week, two or maybe three vendors coming in and reviewing the site conditions for this insulation installation," Williams said.

But perhaps the biggest thing that's holding the opening of the new courthouse back is the fact that the county recently learned that some of the doors that were constructed in the building didn't meet Texas Jail Standards.

"It has to be detention-grade construction and detention-grade material," county commissioner Pat Rousseau said. "The doors that were in the original drawings were not of that quality, so now we are finding it out much later than we would want to find out. The new judge with went several folks, the Sheriff and the Chief Deputy up to Austin to the jail commission to visit about what we could do to resolve this. It's going to be pricey and it's going to extend the length of the construction period, but it needs to be done correctly."

Judge Garza said that these changes could cost upwards of $200,000, but that price still under negotiation.
