Drivers navigate flooded streets of North Beach

The impact of the storm forced some attractions and restaurants on North Beach to close their doors for the day.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — North Beach was one of the many places across the Coastal Bend that saw heavy flooding from the rains and a high tide.

It's where emergency crews were called out to assist with potential rescues.

At times there was a pretty heavy downpour creating water over roadways in the low-lying areas.

Crews put out orange barrels to keep people from driving through those flooded out streets.

It was the mix of rain and high tide brought on by Tropical Storm Alberto that stopped cars in their tracks.

While some visitors chose to turn around, others plowed right through.

The impact of the storm forced attractions and restaurants on North Beach to close their doors.

From our 3NEWS Lex Cam - we spotted one driver who was surrounded by water and left stranded near the USS Lexington Wednesday morning.

One tourist, Shinec Douglas was trying to see how to help guide her husband who was trying to navigate the streets to North Beach.

"Just trying to make sure my husband can get in from the streets, I don't know if he can or not," she said.

An emergency vehicle hauling a boat headed to Beach Avenue, one of the main arteries on North Beach which was completely underwater.

It was here where our crew spotted Hailee Campbell waking through it all after the flooding became too much for her Uber driver's car.

"My Uber driver picks me up, we go down to the first exit, can't do it, having to drive down one of our one ways," Campbell said. "We get down here, we saw a smaller car go for it, she could not, we got half way and started floating down. And thank goodness, the fire department stopped, brought a little boat and everything they were going to rescue us."

Carrie Robertson Meyer with the North Beach Community Association has a clear view of Beach Avenue.

She said city council is expected to take up improvements for the street next week.

"By elevating it and repaving it to make it a safer way to get on and off North Beach during these kinds of tropical storms, right now at 2-3 feet and it's flooded," Robertson Meyer said.
