Water shutoff leads Everhart businesses to improvise or close

A local salon took matters into its own hands to prevent closing due to a water shutoff in the area.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Construction work has been the talk of the town throughout Corpus Christi for months, but that is not the the only thing to blame for a typical Tuesday morning to make a complete 180-degree spin for businesses like the Jewish Community Center.

Several businesses along Everhart dealt with the unexpected loss of water when city crews were forced to shut it off to fix a water leak.

"During drop offs, our families were arriving at 8:45 and literally they [City crews} came in at 8:40 to let us know that they were shutting off our water," executive director Norma Levens said.

With such a quick turnaround for parents to figure out an alternative routine for the day, "indescribable" is just one way to put the matter into words.

"When you have 170 kids and you have to call their parents back and within minutes to let them know that we're not going to be open today, it was pretty chaotic this morning," Levens said.

Owner of Design Concepts Salon & Boutique, Deidra Meyer-Hager, told 3NEWS that because they have been without water on and off since before Tuesday's incident, they have had to take matters into their own hands and improvise.

"What we've done is we've got tea kettles, and we went and filled 5-gallon jugs full of water and we just heat the three-minute tea kettles and we put that in pitchers and we use that to rinse hair color out of hair and we just improvise," Meyer-Hager said.

She hopes that other small businesses in the area that have also been affected are able to push through and bounce back from the unusual times.

"It's been quite a conundrum but I'm hoping that other businesses will be able to make it like we have," Meyer-Hager said.

In a statement to 3NEWS the Corpus Christi Director of Water System Infrastructure, Wes Nebgen, said:

"A small leak on an abandoned service line was repaired today with only a minor interruption to service."

With conditions returned to normal Tuesday evening, the Jewish Community Center should operate as normal Wednesday.
