CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Monday marks the start of school for Kingsville ISD. First Edition reporter Madeline Salinas joined us live to speak with the district's superintendent about what students, parents and the Kingsville community can expect this year.
The school leader was accompanied by a band of cheer leaders, drill team members, student athletes and the school's marching band.
"It's just exhilaration, we're so excited because we get to kick off another new year," said Dr. Celia "Cissy" Reynolds-Perez.
This will be the superintendent's fifth year heading up the Brahma Nation.
She says the impressive showing of students who rallied behind her for First Edition's 4:30 a.m. live shot is proof of Kingsville's recent growth as a community.
"I think our drill team has multiplied by, at least four times. And our cheerleaders, our band, everybody's growing," said the superintendent. "And we want to show the world, really that Kingsville ISD is the place to be."
Dr. Reynolds-Perez said it usually takes a district about five to seven years to transform-- but change in her school seems evident as students and staff prepare to reenter the classroom Monday morning.
"Our students have stepped up to the plate, our teachers and staff have stepped up to the plate, and so we're headed in the right direction."
Several of the district's new teachers have come from other districts. The superintendent says that they will make sure her students are ready to go out and contribute to society after they cross the stage at graduation.
Reynolds-Perez says it has taken plenty of planning over the summer to make sure the kids and staff have a good school year, but Brahma Nation is ready to go.
