West Nile Virus-infected pools found in Corpus Christi

Pools also were detected in other parts of Nueces county, including Bishop and Agua Dulce.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Three West Nile Virus-infected pools were detected in Nueces County, including one in Corpus Christi, according to a news release from county judge Connie Scott.

The other two specimen were collected in Agua Dulce and Bishop. All the reported cases so far have been in pools, and no human cases had been reported as of Friday.

This follows the report of a positive test in Portland on Monday, which is San Patricio county.

Public Health Director of Corpus Christi Dr. Fauzia Khan said the community should be aware of the West Nile Virus and its symptoms.

"It can cause fever, headache, vomiting, or rash. In some people it much more serious than that and some people might not show any symptoms," Khan said. "But people need to be aware of the risk and that's why we're encouraging communities to take care of themselves."

Several tips Khan suggest you should consider are the ones you've heard before

  • Use bug spray with deet

  • Wear long sleeves and pants

  • Avoid activities at dawn and dusk

  • Drain any water on your property to prevent a breeding ground for mosquitos

Our local cities are also trying to combat the mosquito problem by continuing to spray to kill the bugs. Victor Hinojosa with the Nueces County Vector Control said there are 16 traps and they test the traps once a week.

"We do the spraying routes where we test West Nile or the amount of mosquitos we have more populated than others," Hinojosa said.

Hinojosa said as long as the areas test positive for the virus, the county will continue to spray until it's resolved.
