Celebrating Freddy Fender on Domingo Live

We were joined by some of the multi-genre icon's closest collaborators, including Augie Meyers, Max Baca, Dusty Moats and Abel Casillas.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — We don't know who you were thinking of last night, but Sunday morning was all about Freddy Fender as we celebrated the Tex-Mex Country icon's legacy on Domingo Live.

We were joined by some of his closest collaborators, including former "Texas Tornados" bandmate Augie Meyers, former "Los Super Seven" bandmate Max Baca, as well as "Los Texmaniacs" and Texas Country artists Dusty Moats and Abel Casillas.

They all came together to pay tribute to Fender ahead of what would have been his 87th birthday.

As well as the 50th anniversary of Fender's chart-topping album "When the Next Teardrop Falls".

"The spirit and the energy that Mr. Freddy Fender, Baldemar Huerta, left behind for all of us that – he paved the way for most of us Chicanos playing American music and that's just – it's honorable in itself." said Josh Baca of "Los Texmaniacs."

Texas Country Artist Dusty Moats echoed a similar sentiment.

"That guy's been an icon, he's been an institution for Hispanic culture, especially in the country music industry, and also for Hispanic music as well, and so we're spreading that petition and it's on the Change.org page which is a petition that you sign and put your name down and get him in the Country Music Hall of Fame."

In his life, Fender collaborated with plenty of artists, including Dolly Parton. It was Freddy Fender's dying wish to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

If that wish came true today, he would be the first Hispanic musician to receive that honor.
