Gregory-Portland art students learn mural painting from alumni Daniel de Leon

The muralist graduated from G-P in 2003.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Art students from G-P ISD were out at the new location of Yo Philly Steaks in Portland Thursday to watch a brand new mural go up on the side of the building.

Owner, Nick Catalano, bought the property at 1100 Railroad Avenue and Ghent Place where his second location is under construction.

Students caught up as muralist Daniel de Leon—a G-P graduate from the class of 2003—created a baseball player with the jersey number 5, and a football player with the jersey number 80. The two players represent the owner's sons.

Junior student Calie Gregory explained what it was like to learn different techniques directly from an expert on the medium.

"I think it's really cool that we get to learn a new medium and a new technique and we can apply that in the classroom to some of our own artwork," Gregory said.

Catalano told 3NEWS he was happy to give back to the community and said the murals were his way to let kids know there are people who support them and are proud of them.
