CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The retiring city manager of Aransas Pass took to the city's Facebook page on Monday morning to shut down rumors stating that he plans to take a severance package of more than $62,000 following news of his upcoming retirement.

Gary Edwards told the public he voluntarily resigned from his position, meaning that he will not collect a severance payout of any kind.

Edwards began serving as the city manager back in 2017, spearheading recovery efforts following Hurricane Harvey.

He confirmed is retirement last week.

"Severance Payout?

There is a social media explosion out that I have a severance package of over $62,000.  Wow.  News to me.  To be clear, I am not getting a severance payout of any kind. A severance package is not for someone who voluntarily resigns.   It is for a City Manager who is fired for political reasons.  Without such a deterrent, a city could have a revolving door of city managers which is a sure sign of a weak city.  The only thing I get when I leave is payment for unused vacation time…which all employees get.  A severance package for a CM who is fired for political reasons is something that virtually all cities have with City Managers. Otherwise, a city will be reduced to a “good ole boy” system of local government.  Again, I voluntarily resigned, so I do not qualify for any severance agreement.  In all of my 30 years in this business, I have never received a severance payout. Gary Edwards"
