Corpus Christi girl makes military care packages to send to soldiers this holiday season

Diya Trivedi's mother currently serves in the U.S. Army- when tasked with creating a service project, she chose to collect holiday donations for servicemen & women.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As the season of giving inches closer, some people may be looking for a way to give what they can to others.

This holiday season, 11-year-old Diya Trivedi is finding a way to serve those who currently serve our country.

"I chose to do military care packages because nobody really, always thinks about them," said Trivedi.

As an alumnus of Education in Action, a Texas organization that promotes student leadership, Diya had to create a service project. She's calling her project S.O.S. - Serve Our Soldiers.

She said the decision to help out those in active duty was a no-brainer.

"Because they serve the country, and they keep us safe,"  Trevidi said.

Helping the troops means more to Diya because her mother, Hemal Trivedi currently serves in the U.S. Army. Trivedi said her daughter's willingness give to those like her doesn't surprise her at all.

"It makes me very proud," she said. "She's been asked multiple times why she wants to do it on that particular topic. She said, 'You know mom, we think of food donations. We think of coat donations. We do jean donations, but nobody really thinks about you guys. Nobody really thinks about the soldiers and their needs, especially during the holidays.'"

Diya will be collecting everything from hygiene products, small snack and drink items, books and even board games. The project is also taking monetary donations. Diya and her mother will ship those donations to a military base.

Diya hopes that people will consider giving to her service project, because she believes every soldier deserves to feel loved during the holiday season when they're away from their families.

"I hope they feel that they're being thought about during the season of giving," she said.

Between now and Nov. 16, those who would like to donate to Diya's service project can do so at Windsor Park Elementary and Baker Middle School.

After Nov. 16, the public has until Nov. 25 to bring donations to the donation boxes available at the Starbucks on Staples, Saratoga and on the Island, as well as the Best Western Hotel at 6301 S.P.I.D..
