Expect some high meat prices this Super Bowl Sunday

One local meat market owner said there are several factors impacting price such as the post COVID-19 effects and a drought.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Despite the tension in some team rivalries, one thing most fans can agree on is they like to eat, and they don't want it to cost an arm and a leg for them to do so.

Employees at local meat markets like managing partner Christian Ockels with Champs Meat Market, said they are doing the best they can for their customers' pockets but they can't help supply and demand issues.

Ockels said they know all about sourcing because their meat comes from their own cattlemen. He said market prices might be big, but so is the quality of their beef.

"We'd love to see meat prices go down, absolutely," Ockles said. "But unfortunately right now in the cattle industry it's tight numbers. It's supply and demand until we are able to get that herd back up."

On the southside at the Staples Meat Market's new location owner, Michael Meehan, said there are several factors impacting price such as the post COVID-19 effects and a drought.

"It takes usually about 30 months for the cattle market to recover after a drought because that's the amount of time that they can grow up and when they're processing," Meehan said.

Both local markets are doing the best they can price-wise for their loyal customers ahead of the game.

"We are going to be running several specials, we should be having some fun," Ockels said.

"We keep our pricing down so we can bring in more people and they are able to afford other things, other than just food," Meehan said.
