If you brought the Christmas decorations out of storage Friday, you weren't alone.
The day after Thanksgiving has become the unofficial day to begin the work that transforms neighborhoods into a Christmas wonderland.
That's especially true for the Schanen Estates neighborhood on the city's southside. A neighborhood specifically known for it's Candy Cane Lane that attracts thousands of visitors every year.
3NEWS caught up with Alex Trevino as he set up his complex Christmas display. Something that took a lot of planning.
"We got to run this extension cord here, plug it here, power this, we got three plus here, can plug this this and this here, work around it before you know it you have this wonderland," he said.
A few homes down, Zackary Dives showed just how strong with the force his family is.
"They like the theme, because everyone is basically a Star Wars fan" he said.
Over on Mc Alpin Drive, Gloria Bocanegra and the rest of her family, along with an army of helpers were setting up a sure sign of the season. Dozens of red and white larger than life candy canes were brought in on a flat bed truck and put in place to make the path for all the families expected to flood streets and sidewalks in the weeks ahead.
"We take a lot of pride in what we do, we get so excited, be apart of something huge in the community, something everyone looks forward to brings memories and tradition to so many families," she said.
Candy Duke and her husband are also putting in the work, one string of garland at a time.
"We just kind of take it slow, we are senior citizens, so we've been working on it a couple of days," she said.
A time honored tradition that truly takes a village.
"Just the joy of seeing the kids coming by, we can stand out here in our driveway and wave merry Christmas to them," she said.
The Bocanegra family has been doing this for a while now, and are also working on a special Christmas village in their backyard.
They're holding a concert series every weekend leading up to Christmas.
