Judge Missy Medary sworn in for another term on Texas Indigent Defense Commission

Judge Medary said she continues serving on the commission because she believes it's a responsibility to help improve defense for those with financial needs.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Judge Missy Medary was sworn into office on Wednesday to continue on with her work for a statewide commission.

The judge was appointed by the governor for another term as a board member on the Texas Indigent Defense Commission.

Her fellow district judge, Susan Barclay administered the oath of office inside of Judge Medary's Courtroom.

Judge Medary was first appointed to the board back in 2019.

The commission is charged with handing out money to countries across the state to start up programs like mental health public defender's offices.

"I'll tell you why I do it. I believe in indigent defense; I believe the Constitution tells us that right, we have to do this, and I think we need to improve indigent defense."

Medary also tells 3NEWS that the commission doles out around $30 million a year to help fund those programs to try and ensure that everyone is well represented in court, regardless of their financial situation.
