CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
The School of Music at Texas A&M University- Kingsville hosted the largest competition of its kind in the nation this weekend!
Nearly 1,000 trumpet players made their way to the Coastal Bend for the 'National Trumpet Competition', representing 36 states across the US!
The competition has been going strong for 32 years, first taking place in Fairfax, Virginia. Since 2014 it has been traveling the US and this year brings the competition back to Texas for only the second time!
Participant's range from middle schoolers all the way to graduate students.
Associate professor of trumpet and jazz Kyle Millsap said taking part in this event is an opportunity of a lifetime for many of his students.
"So my favorite part is seeing — especially from my students — watching the opportunities they have to mingle with players from other universities, to mingle with peers at other schools, to be able to meet some of their trumpet heroes," Millsap said.
He said that holding the event in the Coastal Bend offers a unique perspective, especially for those from other schools and other states to experience all that South Texas has to offer.
