Corpus Christi leaders advocate for business owners as TWIA prepares rate vote

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association will discuss a 10 percent rate hike recommendation with its board of directors Aug. 6.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Business leaders and state representatives along with city and county leaders gathered to share their opposition on a proposed Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) rate hike.

TWIA plans to discuss a 10 percent increase to wind insurance premiums, a hike organization officials say is needed to keep the association from running out of funding.

Monday's meeting hosted by the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce at the CCRTA building encouraged small business owners to speak out.

State Rep. Todd Hunter, one of the biggest opponents to a rate increase, advised attendees to make a public comment refusing the rake hike at the organization's website.

"Get everybody, public comment at twia.org, 'no rate hike,'" he said.

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said the proposed hike would greatly impact many local businesses and families.

"When you have insurance costs that continue to go up by 10 percent in this proposed case that's very crucial for any business, it's crucial for a family to have to you know put out more money," Guajardo said.

TWIA will meet in Galveston with its board of directors on Aug. 6.
