Local YWCA shares Dia de los Muertos traditions with residents

It's a tradition traced back to Mexico that celebrates the life and legacies of loved ones who've passed away.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Friday, families everywhere remembered loved ones who've gone before us on Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead.

It's a beautiful tradition traced back to Mexico that celebrates the life and legacies of loved ones who've passed away.

In Corpus Christi, the YWCA hosted an event with food, Disney Pixar's 2017 film "Coco," and a an explanation of the meaning behind the traditional "ofrenda."

"There should be representation of the four universal elements including, fire element, water element, air and earth," YWCA Minister of Culture Michael Sabala said. "The fire element is represented by the candles. The air element is represented by the papel picado that the wind blows and let's you know that it's there. We also have the water element because the souls are thirsty from their long journey, they need to be refreshed. And then the earth elements includes the offerings like food and beverage that the deceased enjoyed while they were here among the living."
