CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Sergio Contreras was found guilty of continuous sexual assault of a child Friday and was sentenced to 50 years in prison with no chance of parole.
Two young girls, between the ages of 10 and 12, accused Contreras, 38, who was in court Thursday in Aransas Pass.
The charges come years later, which San Patricio DA Sam Smith calls a "delayed outcry."
He says that young kids often don't have the ability to "come right out" and tell someone what happened because they're scared or embarrassed.
But he offers advice for anyone who may find themselves in a similar situation.
"You have to trust someone. Either your parents to tell them and/or someone in your school - a counselor," said Smith. "You certainly can report it to the police, but many times, they don't feel comfortable doing that. But at least tell someone what's going on so that we can get you the help that you need."
He will face 25-99 years, or life in prison without the possibility of parole, if a guilty verdict is reached.
