CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man originally facing aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges in connection with a shooting early Sunday morning is now facing upgraded murder charges after the woman he shot -- his wife -- died Monday.
Corpus Christi Police Department officers said they responded to a call at 12:09 a.m. Sunday in the 3600 block of La Paz -- near Holly Road and Carroll Lane -- where they found a 27-year-old woman with a gunshot wound.
The woman, who was later identified as the man's wife, was taken to a Corpus Christi hospital where she later died.
Jimmy Tozo Portales was arrested Sunday night and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Those charges were upgraded to murder charges following the woman's death.
He is being held on a $850,000 bond for the murder charge.
He also was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. His bond for that charge is $25,000.
