CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Mayor Paulette Guajardo joined our First Edition team this Wednesday ahead of Hurricane Beryl's expected impact in the Coastal Bend.
The storm is set to make its way into the Gulf of Mexico sometime around this Fourth of July weekend, which could mean some dangerous conditions for beachgoers and visitors looking to celebrate the holiday on the coast.
Guajardo says that 200 police officers are scheduled to work across the city this weekend to help keep people safe through the festivities. As many as 80 of those officers will be on beach patrol.
"We are keeping our beach operations, you know, on alert. But we are a coastal city, and we are very- our protocol is strong, our teams know exactly what to do, when to do them and how to implement all of that. Most importantly-- is keeping in touch with our residents."
The mayor says that she and local leaders are in daily briefings tracking the system's still uncertain path as it makes its way through the Caribbean.
"We work very, very closely with our emergency operations center team- our fire department, police department, and city manager, of course... and the National Weather Service."
After going through Hurricane Harvey back in 2017, the mayor says that she has learned several important lessons about going through hurricane season.
"Communication is #1," said Guajardo.
"Communication with our public and making sure that they're informed with, you know, good resources. In the right ways, because it's important what reliable sources that you depend upon. We want to always make sure that people have a plan."
