CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Mike Tamez has withdrawn his name from the Nueces County sheriff's race after winning the Democratic primary March 5. The Robstown chief of police ran uncontested Super Tuesday after switching political parties for the race back in November, citing alleged issues with Republican party leadership.
Tamez would have faced off against incumbent Sheriff JC Hooper. However, last month, he was appointed by the Robstown city council as their chief.
Tamez leaving the race for sheriff means Hooper will continue as sheriff of Nueces County uncontested.
Nueces County elections manager Diana Mungaia confirmed to 3NEWS Monday morning that Tamez withdrew from the race. Unofficial cumulative election results show Tamez received 10,120 total votes.
JC Hooper also ran uncontested in the Republican primary. He received 17,195 votes, according to the same data.
Hooper is waiting to release a statement until the withdrawal is officially posted to the Secretary of State's website.
