CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some of you might have come across Moody High School teacher Brigette Ramirez on Tik Tok.
She posts everything from her daily life as a teacher to showing off her calligraphy skills as she reviews and rates the best writing utensils.
And this past fall, Ramirez also shared that she had started a hygiene drawer for her students
"Over the summer, I read research, and it said that a lot of students who live in underprivileged homes don't go to school because they don't have basic hygiene needs and I felt a calling to be able to provide that to my students because we teach in the lower SES community," Ramirez said.
She saw success with the hygiene drawer in her classroom and started posting restocking videos for her followers back in August, but it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that the power of social media far exceeded Ramirez's expectations.
"And they were like 'This is so and so from your P.O. box. We need you to come pick up your packages.' They were like 'You have over 500 packages. We need somebody to pick them up.' And I was like 'What?!'," she said.
Ramirez is still receiving at least 50 packages every day from people as far as Japan, Netherlands and Kuwait.
She's even had companies like Listerine, Aquaphor, Herbal Essence, Nivea and Conair reaching out to donate.
But these donations haven't just benefited Ramirez's classroom.
"I wanted to make sure I fit the needs of my students first, then my school, then our district and then the community. We've been passing our boxes and big tote bags of products to people," she said.
Ramirez is grateful for the support she's received from her followers, but what matters to her the most is that her actions have inspired other teachers to do what they can to better support their students.
"We've received packages from everywhere and not just packages, also emails and notes from people saying that they're going to start their own student hygiene drawers around the world. What's crazy is that I felt a calling for myself and my students and then it grew into something like this where people the world are going to be providing stuff for their kids. That is just an amazing feeling."
