Nueces County looks at possible work contract with Amistad Health

The Corpus Christi – Nueces County Public Health District termination date was originally set for April 1. County Commissioners voted for an extension to Sept. 30.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County is looking at securing medical services for their clinic located in the Calderon County Building in Robstown. This comes as the separation date of the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District quickly approaches. The date originally set for March 1, has been delayed to September 30.

Nueces County Judge Connie Scott said that a contract has been drafted between the county and Amistad Community Health Center, but nothing has been finalized. That decision will be made Wednesday during regularly scheduled commissioner's court.

Scott said that the building is a vital resource to those in rural parts of Nueces County.

"People can travel to it and it's not such a hardship on them," she said.

Amistad CEO Eric Baggerman said that if the contract does come to fruition, they will be able to expand services to new heights.

"In this proposal we have is to even be able to help get medications to people, because some people got diabetes but can't afford it. We're going to try to work through that to make sure that is not a barrier," he said.

Baggerman said that if the contract is secured, the building will be able to provide outreach to smaller communities such as Agua Dulce, Banquete, Bishop and parts of Aransas Pass.

Nueces County Director of Health and Wellness Xavier Gonzales said that Amistad's reputation speaks for itself when it comes to servicing the community.

"Amistad already has a history of providing primary health and clinical services, so this would be adding to what they do from a public health standpoint," he said.

It's a move, that if approved, Gonzales said is essential to reaching those most in need.

"Their major business model is to provide primary care services. so they would then have a good pathway of connecting people to medical services," he said.
