Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office to see renovations

Chief ME Rajesh Kannan said having more room doesn't just help with case load, but also in providing opportunities to students who are interested in forensics.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office is getting a much needed facelift along with some state-of-the-art equipment.

Nueces County Chief Medical Examiner Rajesh Kannan said the updates were long overdue.

"This is basically going to double the square feet of what we have," Kannan said. "It's approximately 7,000 square feet of what we have now."

With more space to work will come updated technology, something the medical examiner said will benefit Nueces County residents now that his office has officially stopped performing autopsies for other counties

"We are right now, not doing out of county cases so, we are dedicated completely to people in Nueces County," he said.

Kannan said that work will continue as normal, even though the department currently is down three investigators.

"Also recruited two part-time doctors, who are trained just like me from Bexar county," he said. "And we have a lot of applicants from the local university applying to many positions."

Kannan said that having more room doesn't just help with case load, but also, in providing opportunities shaping the future.

"We have a lot of visitors interested in learning forensics, I'm interested in teaching," he said.

Nueces County Pct. 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney said the updates will give residents more peace of mind.

"It'll be a new facility and hopefully, there will be all kinds of areas there, it will have a nice waiting area there for people to hear about their loved ones," Chesney  said.
