ODEM, Texas — The city of Odem announced Thursday that a Boil Water notice put in place a day prior has been rescinded.
The public water system has reportedly taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water it distributes for human consumption purposes and has provided the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality.
Those with questions can contact Odem City Hall at (361) 368-2831.
Several Odem residents woke up with low water pressure after a main water line burst on West Baylor Street overnight Wednesday.
This is just a day after the City of Taft announced a water boil -- which was also rescinded Thursday-- for residents due to a water main break on Highway 181 and San Patricio Avenue.
City of Odem Administrator Sal Hernandez said in order to fix the pipeline, city crews had to turn off the water pressure from the water tower.
"With some of the issues we have with our valves around here we had to shut it down at the water tower," he said. "Sometimes what happens if the water pressure drops below a certain PSI -- 20 PSI to be exact, we had to mandatorily issue a water boil," Hernandez said.
The low pressure and water boil notice led to a couple of businesses shutting their doors, along with the cancelation of classes across Odem-Edroy ISD.
Roy Camacho teaches in the school district and said the water issue eventually led to him being sent home early.
"They had to delay school, they tried their best to keep school functional and then before you know it, they had no choice to cancel it," Camacho said. "Then unfortunately, about an hour later the water came back on."
Hernandez said the City is not only working hard to repair water lines but to also update their water line maps, but cost could be an issue.
"We have to do a citywide assessment which is going to take time and of course money," he said. "Money is an object at this time with the city's financial situation."
Hernandez said the City has taken the appropriate steps to ensure everyone's safety. Now, they're waiting on the water samples to determine the next step.
"Once we get cleared with the samples through our labs then we can lift the water boil," he said. "We're hoping that within 24 hours we'll be able to lift that ban."
Odem-Edroy ISD will resume classes Thursday and advise parents to send students with bottled water for the rest of the week.
