CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Yeager Elementary School students celebrated Black History Month by "honoring the past, inspiring the future."
The event, "The Celebration of Freedom: The progress of African Americans in the struggle for freedom and justice" was organized P.E. Coach Margaret Wimbish.
Pre-K and kinder students sang "We are the World," first graders performed a living history show and fourth graders performed a skit inspired by Harriet Tubman.
Principal Christa Rasche emphasized the effort was to inspire a more tolerant future for our youth.
"I think as we recognized the history, Black history, and all of the injustice that occured, we can look at today's society and as we're talking to the students, and empowering them not to tolerate that sort of thing," Rasche said. "We're hoping to create a better future as we inspire them."
Wimbish hopes everyone took away two key words shown throughout the event.
"Love, family," Wimbish said. "As you can tell, all of these parents that came out to support their children, and we love Yeager Tigers so, just love and support."
