CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Coastal Bend area pets got their paws on some free food Friday morning.
Organizers with People Assisting Animal Control periodically host pet food giveaways in partnership with the Humane Society and chewy.com at their facility on Ayers St. Friday saw a strong crowd turnout- at one point there were people lined up all the way down to Saratoga.
Crews worked quickly to move everyone through the line and get those cats and dogs their dinners.
PAAC president, Cheryl Martinez said rising pet food costs are likely the reason the event attracted so many recipients.
"Food prices have gone up 40% so people are struggling and so we open this to everybody," said Martinez.
"We started this in 2020 and yes they have increased drastically. Since 2020, we've given out to the community over a million dollars in food."
