Palacios residents help each other clean up after facing Beryl head on

Fallen trees, leaning power poles and a shattered door at the police department were just a few signs that a severe storm rolled through.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The small southeast Texas community of Palacios is dealing with the after effects of heavy rains and strong wind from Beryl that tore through early Monday morning .

The break of day revealed the extent of damage left behind from the Category 1 hurricane. Fallen trees were seen all across town from the powerful wind gusts.

Ray de la Rosa was one of 15 residents who hunkered down at the Boys and Girls Club temporary shelter where torrential rain found its way inside.

"It was scary, all night I couldn't sleep," De la Rosa said.

Along State Highway 35 flashing lights warned drivers of leaning poles and downed lines.

"Hopefully we get our power back on," resident Tony Vu said. "[It's been off] since midnight or so."

3NEWS followed Vu as he fished out his crab traps that were carried across the bay during the storm.

A peeled away roof at The Donut Palace and shattered door to the police department were more visible signs that the severe weather event took place.

While some residential streets were left underwater, other roads were blocked by debris.

"The trees have been trimmed pretty good I think," resident Martha Riccio said. "I thought I would lose more of that magnolia but it did okay."

A different tree, on Martha and her husband, Ted's, property however wasn't so lucky, coming down top their pickup truck.

The couple was out doing their part to clear the road, getting a helping hand from a neighbor with a chainsaw.

Neighbors helping neighbors, something that Martha said the town is good for, as the process to clean up is just getting started.
