CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Port of Corpus Christi celebrated on Wednesday at its annual State of the Port address at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center.
Port Chairman Charlie Zhan covered some of the organization's recent highlights, including progress toward the fourth and final phase of the project to deepen the ship channel and the opening of the wildlife rescue center at the Texas State Aquarium.
In a recent announcement, Zhan revealed that our port is now the world's third-largest crude oil export gateway, behind Russia and Saudi Arabia. After serving for 12 years, Zhan holds the record as the longest-serving port commissioner.
"I guess my biggest disappointment is that in my real job, I am a water lawyer and I know that not only Texas, but the Coastal Bend is in dire need of an alternate source of water," he said. "I thought I could lead us down that path to get there and I haven't been able to do that. I'd like to see that one thing finished, but I'll be monitoring it from outside."
The port remains the largest U.S. port in total revenue tonnage.
