Council members look to get back to basics after Proposition A's failure

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said the vote was an important part of the process to find a viable plan.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A question following the defeat of Proposition A by Corpus Christi voters: What happens now?

Tuesday's vote against the city of Corpus Christi's Proposition A was focused on the plan to build a convention-center hotel.

City leaders said they heard residents' message.

"Right now, hotels are not a topic we should be focused on," said Corpus Christi City Councilman At-Large Michael Hunter. "I don't know how much we should stress that, but that was the key word that got a lot of people out to say, 'No, we don't want to pay for a hotel.' "

Dist. 3 councilman Roland Barrera, along with Dist. 5 councilman Gil Hernandez, said they learned a lot.

"The whole premise was to improve the convention center," Hernandez said. "We have the facility. We need to take care of it. It's got a lot of issues."

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said the vote was an important part of the process to find a viable plan.

"How do we take what we've heard and move us forward to define a road that leads us to the same place?" Guajardo said.

There is no timetable for a new plan, but council members said the next couple of years will be all about talking with the community.

"I think we need to go back and meet with those community leaders," Hunter said. "Ask them how they passed the type A in the first place. Ask what other groups are going to be affected by the type A going forward. Include some of those important things like affordable housing. And I think we need to re-look at the sea wall."
