Push for emergency demolition of old Nueces County Courthouse

According to Commissioner Joe Gonzalez, it is up to the Texas Historical Commission to let them knock it down.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — If you've driven by the old Nueces County Courthouse you've probably noticed the building appears to be in pretty bad shape.

The building has been standing since 1914, but it hasn't been in use since the late 1970's!

3NEWS spoke with county officials Wednesday who say homeless people continue to tear down the fences they put in place, seeking shelter or somewhere to stay.

County Commissioner Joe A. Gonzalez said he's been working hard to get an emergency order to demolish the building.

"People drive down the bridge, and it's an eyesore," he said. "And there's people and they don't talk about it in a nice way. People, you know, talk about it in a bad way. And that land belongs to the Port and to the County."

Gonzalez said it is up to the Texas Historical Commission to let them knock it down. If they do not release it, they are stuck with the building for another three years.
