CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Police are searching for an attempted burglary suspect who was involved in a shootout with an off-duty Corpus Christi Police Department officer after the suspect reportedly tried to break into the officer's personal vehicle early Friday morning.
The incident began just before 3:30 a.m. in the officer's driveway behind the South Staples location of Crunch Gym when he was woken up by his Ring camera.
The officer called into dispatch to let them know he was following the suspect's vehicle after the attempted burglary. That's when someone in the black Jeep SUV reportedly fired several shots at him.
He followed the suspect's car to the dead end of South Oso Parkway before returning gun fire with the suspect, police said.
The suspect or suspects then fled the area.
Patrol officers later spotted the car on Staples and began following it, but ultimately lost it around South Staples Street and Everhart Road.
Police said they are now looking for the small black Jeep SUV, which may have an out-of-state license plate.
They do not know if the Jeep belongs to the suspect or if it was stolen.
CCPD says the off-duty officer was not injured and it is unknown if anyone in the suspected vehicle was injured, but local hospitals were checked for recent walk-in victims.
