CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There are a few key spots to keep an eye out for in the Dec. 14 runoff election, including the race for Corpus Christi City Council District 1.
Incumbent Everett Roy said he's managed to do a lot in his term especially as it pertains to water regulation throughout the city.
"I have worked to champion increasing our surface water, which we have," he said. "We got 12.5 mgd additionally gallons out of the Mary Rhodes Pipeline."
Roy said that when it comes to the topic of desalination, he understands both the project's necessity and its objectivity, especially as it relates to cost and environmental concerns.
"You look at the amount of pipe it was going to take the Harbor Island to be able to pipe it and build that facility, it's a lot of money," he said. "Someone said that it might cost up to a billion dollars just for the pipe alone."
Former city councilman Billy Lerma said his reinterest in city government was motivated by what he was hearing in the community.
"The people are tired, they want their city residential streets fixed and they want water," he said. "Those are the two most important things when I was out block-walking these last couple of months that's what I kept hearing."
Lerma said that one complaint that really stood out to him was the condition of our street infrastructure.
"We've been promising streets for the last 25 or 30 years to the citizens of Corpus Christi and we're not even finished with 50 percent of the residential streets in the city, why is that," he said.
In the end both candidates said they just want the best for their district.
"You have industry, you have tourism, you have residential, I have to make sure I share that wealth with all of District 1 because it's so diverse," Lerma said.
"Each area has different challenges," Roy said. "Working on streets and sewers and sidewalks and being able to work with TxDOT to make sure that sure that the traffic flows correctly."
