CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Update: The lights have been turned back on at the Selena statue!
Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department officials are blaming the recent rains for the recently repaired lights failing at the Mirador de la Flor at 600 N. Shoreline Blvd. -- better known locally as the "Selena Statue."
"The temporary outage was maybe due to heavy rains causing a malfunction," department director Robert Dodd stated in a written response to 3NEWS asking about the outage Friday.
A viewer called the 3NEWS newsroom Friday upset because the popular tourist destination was not working properly after undergoing LED lighting upgrades earlier this year.
When enhancements to all eight miradores were unveiled in March, city manager Peter Zanoni said a better maintenance schedule would be put in place to make sure the upgrades stayed intact.
The mirador has had ongoing issues with the lights at the Selena mirador. The city held a ceremony to celebrate the new LED lights in March.
