Sinton resident's water bill back to normal after more than $2K charge

Norma Jean Perez claimed it was inaccurate. That prompted testing of her water meter, which determined it was defective.

SINTON, Texas — After a Sinton resident was left with a water bill of more than $2,000 earlier this year, she searched for answers.

Norma Jean Perez claimed it was inaccurate. That prompted testing of her water meter, which determined it was defective.

Sinton City Manager John Hobson told 3NEWS that after the city determined the meter was defective, Perez's bill was adjusted to her average monthly usage.

Perez said it was important for the bill to return to normal given her current living situation.

"I need the regular bill, because I live in housing authorities, so I really was grateful and thankful and a relief," Perez said. "The weight off your shoulder."

Living in her Sinton home for almost three years, Perez said she does not use enough water for her bill to be more than $2,000.

She said she usually pays about $83 to $85 a month for water. She kept paying that amount every month despite the abnormally high bill.

With the defective meter now replaced, she explained that she was told she will get a normal bill in August.

She said it was emotional for her since she could not afford a water bill that expensive, but feels better now knowing she got the help that she needed.

"Ease with the community, knowing that they were very understandable to how I reached out," Perez said.

Perez said she appreciates 3NEWS' coverage of her story to help solve the issue.
