CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline's Emergency Medicine Residency Program was on the verge of becoming cancelled a few months ago. However, the hospital district was able to help iron out a six-year agreement to keep the program going.
Associate Program Director for the Emergency Medicine Program, Dr. J.D. Cambron, is looking forward to having a new group of residents starting in the fall.
“We have matched 12 new residents, so we matched a full class," said Cambron. "We’ll have 12 interns starting in the fall and we are very excited for that. For the next 36 months starting in June, they are going to learn the ins and outs of emergency medicine and resuscitation critically ill patients at the bedside, which is going to better serve the South Texas region for many many years going forward.”
Nueces County Commissioner, Brent Chesney, said he was thrilled to hear the latest news about the residency program. However, he wants to see Spohn agree to at least a ten-year contract so that the program is here for many more years to come.
Chesney is also part of the permanent EMR Program Committee, which is working to make the program a permanent fixture. The committee meets once a month and is looking at all options if Spohn won’t commit to a longer-term deal.
"We would rather stay with Spohn because it is easier, but at the same time we want someone who is committed to this program and there are other healthcare companies in this community that really really want this program," Chesney said. "It’s a great program. It’s a wonderful program. You have some of the best doctors in the country that run this program.”
The EMR Program Committee is set to meet again on March 25 to continue it's discussions on this issue. Chesney is hoping a ten-year deal can be reached with someone. After that, the committee will work on other projects to attract and retain more doctors in other specialties.
