Big waves from Tropical Storm Alberto expose wood, wires and piping near Bob Hall Pier

Nueces County Coastal Parks Director Scott Cross said some of the debris could potentially date back decades.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The impacts of Tropical Storm Alberto are certainty still being seen here in the Coastal Bend, and most recently at the stretch of beach near Bob Hall Pier on Padre Island.

Nueces County Coastal Parks Director Scott Cross said he and his team are working to clean up various forms of debris left behind by the tropical storm. He said that what's most alarming, is that some of the debris could potentially date back decades.

"If you go back and look through Google Earth, go way back, back in the 60's, early 70's you can see these out buildings," Cross said. "Whether they are showers or restrooms, I don't really know what they were I could see them on Google Earth."

In terms of a timeline for cleanup, Cross said that the County is hoping to have the debris cleaned up by the end of the week.

"We're going to start Thursday and Public Works thinks we're going to have it knocked out by Friday," he said. "The goal is to get it all out of there, all cleaned up. We're not doing any repairs to anything, we're just getting debris tackled before the Fourth of July weekend."

As for funding, Nueces County Precinct 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney said there's a chance that they'll see reimbursement, but it may not be much.

"County's got to meet a threshold, doubt that the county's gonna meet a threshold, but from my understanding is, if we don't meet the state's threshold, then we probably don't get any reimbursement," Chesney said.

Cross said they are exploring other options.

"We've identified a potential funding source for it, still had to go through some permitting though. Dune beach permitting in order to do it though," he said.
