CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — CCISD offered letters of intent to 17 paid student resident teachers through the College of Education and Human Development at the university.
The residency is a year-long program, where the student residents work for the district while continuing to complete their studies.
Associate Dean of Education, Kathleen Lynch-Davis with TAMUCC tells 3-NEWS that this a way for the students to gain firsthand experience teaching in a classroom while also providing a service to the district.
"We know from research that if you spend your student teaching experiences in schools like you're going to teach in yourself, you're better prepared to be a teacher in those schools," Lynch-Davis said.
One of those 17 student teacher residents, Caitlyn Breiten tells 3-NEWS that remembering her past teachers and how they impacted her education led her to where she is today.
"The impact that my teachers left on me was a huge hinderance in my decision to become a teacher," Breiten said. "I also want to leave an impact on my students and just show that I love them, I care for them and they are cherished."
