CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Spring break is here and the Texas State Aquarium is giving visitors something to sink their teeth into.
The aquarium has been seeing major crowds celebrating spring break -- and visitors seem to be finding their way to one of the most popular attractions, the Caribbean Reef System exhibit.
The exhibit opened back in 2017, and showcases what a possible shipwreck in the Caribbean Sea would look like while featuring a variety of seafaring creatures, including the main attraction: six sandbar sharks! According to aquarium officials, one of the sharks was actually born there.
Brenna Lemon, with the Fish and Hepatology Department, told 3NEWS about all that goes into take care of these magnificent sharks on a full-time basis how the work fulfills a childhood fascination.
"I love being here, I love working with these animals specifically," Lemon said. "I've always had an interest in sharks, and I just get to live that every day, and it's just really rewarding knowing that you're doing something that's making a difference for others."
Lemon said the exhibit is the closest visitors can get to seeing a shipwreck at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, with its living coral reef attracting a variety of sea life. All while staying nice and dry.
