Thanksgiving meal costs surge, shoppers feel the pinch as holidays close in

Sweet potato prices for holiday meals have risen by 4 percent from last year. Canned green beans for your green bean casserole will now cost 9 percent more.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Next week, many of us will prepare traditional Thanksgiving dishes for the dinner table.

However, inflation affecting supermarket prices may influence the total cost in your basket.

Similar to others, Sylvia Rodriguez has begun to notice the increasing cost of grocery shopping.

"I went a get Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and was just kind of shocked at how much I spent because last year, I didn't spend this much," Rodriguez said. "It's sad, you know. You're trying to make ends meet all the time, but I'm hoping it's change maybe in the coming years."

Turkey prices have decreased by approximately 16 percent from last year, but according to Wells Fargo, the cost of ham has risen by 5 percent. Popular sides such as canned cranberry sauce have seen a 7 percent increase in price.. 

Sweet potato prices for holiday meals have risen by 4 percent from last year. Canned green beans for your green bean casserole will now cost 9 percent more, while canned pumpkin prices have surged by 30 percent.

Local shopper Diana Garcia has observed the same trend.

"The prices have gone up on a lot of the things that we use for Thanksgiving, and I can really see the difference. Stuff that I used to pay many a dollar something - now it's two something. Just a lot of things have gone up," Garcia said. 

Jessica Torres bought potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner and isn't surprised by the ongoing price increase.

"I've noticed a big price change in a lot of things. You're looking at a little over seven dollars for an eight-pound bag of potatoes. It's shocking, but yeah everything has gone up," Torres said.
