The Purple Door hosts first annual pickleball tournament

All proceeds from the event went toward furthering The Purple Door's mission of helping victims and survivors of domestic violence.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Hundreds of pickleball players laced up their tennis shoes to attend the first ever Purple Pickleball tournament at the Al Kruse Tennis and Pickleball Center.

All proceeds from the event went toward furthering The Purple Door's mission of helping victims and survivors of domestic violence.

It is planned to be an annual event and also allowed the organization to expand their reach in the Coastal Bend.

"We have our educators out in the community to reach out to not only the community to make sure they know what we are doing but people in the community that maybe haven't reached out to us yet that need our help," said President and CEO of The Purple Door, Frances Wilson.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so the event also gave an opportunity for survivors to speak out about the issue.

Shelbie Ledesma, the Engagement Manager at The Purple Door said that getting involved with the community is a way to help those who are struggling in silence.

"We really wanted to get out in the community and meet people where they are and bring our mission of ending domestic and sexual violence in the Coastal Bend to our people," said Ledesma.

The Purple Door is hoping to host a bigger pickleball tournament next year.
