Identity of South Staples Street pedestrian fatality released

Police said 65-year-old Ricardo Reyes was not using a crosswalk when he was hit by an SUV.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A 65-year-old man was killed Wednesday night after being hit by an SUV. 

The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Ricardo Reyes.

Corpus Christi Police Department Lt. Gabe Garcia said he was not using the crosswalk. 

Garcia said police were called to the 3500 block of South Staples Street at about 6:30 for a report of a person being hit by a vehicle.

At the time police were called, Reyes was severely injured. He later died.

The driver stopped to offer help, Garcia said.

The accident closed South Staples Street from Hayward Drive to Carroll Lane, near Ray High School.
